A Top Derm Weighs In On The Cult Product With 42k Likes At Sephora

Sephora users have given HUM Nutrition’s Daily Cleanse over forty-two thousand likes and more than 500 4+ star reviews. Impressive, right? Designed to “improve skin clarity and get rid of toxins that can cause breakouts”, HUM’s daily supplement initially caught our attention, but we wanted to dig deeper. The beauty industry is full of promises, but we’re well aware that, quite literally, not all that glitters is gold.

We asked Dr. Nancy Samolitis of West Hollywood’s Facile Dermatology to weigh in on the top-rated supplement to see if she thought the formula held up to the hype. She tried the supplement for herself, sorted through the science and had this to share with us…

Meet the Dermatologist: Dr. Nancy Samolitis

In my dermatology practice, our motto is “good skin should be easy”. I think that a lot of people don’t believe that’s true, but it really can be.

Having good skin is all about finding the ingredients that your skin needs and feeding those ingredients to your body both inside and out. Good skin is a reflection of your whole health.

If you have recently walked down the supplement aisle, you may have noticed that the industry has been exploding with options — maybe too many options.

Just like skincare, choosing the right supplement for your needs can require a lot of research and some expert advice.

In dermatology, we see a lot of people with acne (literally all day, every day!). Even patients who come in for something different often ask “…by the way, what do I do about my acne?”.

Acne is one of the most universal skin problems. It doesn’t discriminate much for age, gender, skin color, or ethnicity. There are many different types of acne from blackheads to cystic and beyond.

What is key that you need to understand is that a lot of what causes acne is related to what is going on inside of your body and with your overall health.

There are a lot of supplements out there that claim to help to clear acne, but how do you know which ones really work?

I practice what I preach and tried HUM Nutrition’s Daily Cleanse supplement to see what all the hype is about. Daily Cleanse has received over 500 4+ star reviews on Sephora which certainly catches one’s attention, even as a dermatologist.

HUM Nutrition’s Daily Cleanse supplement packs a combination of powerhouse detoxifying ingredients to help primarily with two things: skin and digestive issues. First things first, I researched the science…

The hero ingredients in Daily Cleanse include two nutrient-dense microalgae, spirulina and chlorella.

Spirulina is is a salt water algae that is more well-known in the health supplement world, while chlorella is a fresh water algae. Both are rich in proteins, vitamin C and B vitamins which makes them great supplements for vegans.
They also contain omega-3 acids which can reduce levels of bad cholesterol and lend hydration to the skin. These algae are known for their detoxifying properties, meaning that they bind harmful toxins like chemicals found in food and heavy metals (lead, mercury, and arsenic, for example) so that they are safely flushed from the body.

Although most people likely don’t have dangerous levels of these metals and toxins in the body, we are continually exposed to trace amounts of them from our environmental surroundings and they can contribute to many chronic diseases including acne and other skin diseases.

These algae also have anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-yeast properties which are protective against several types of skin conditions. Scientific studies show reduced skin inflammation and improved wound healing in subjects who were supplemented with spirulina and chlorella.

Daily Cleanse also contains multiple antioxidant-rich natural ingredients. Antioxidants protect skin from developing cellular damage after exposure to sun and environmental pollutants so they are excellent for anti-aging and maintaining healthy skin…

Beetroot packs a punch of vitamin C and stimulates healthy blood flow. Studies have shown that it can improve acne, especially when combined with minerals such as zinc.

Red Clover is a type of antioxidant known as an isoflavone. It is commonly used to treat symptoms of menopause because it is also a phytoestrogen. It has been shown to improve quality and texture of skin and hair, particularly in aging women.

Milk thistle is another antioxidant, more commonly known to detoxify the liver. It also has protective effects on skin in regards to ultraviolet light damage. It prevents glycation (sugar binding) of proteins which can cause a breakdown of cell function.

Dandelion leaf is a mineral-rich product that is traditionally used in teas, as it is a natural diuretic for kidney health. It also reduces oxidative stress in skin to promote healthy collagen.

Oregon grape root is a long used herbal remedy for treating diabetes and high cholesterol. It contains an antimicrobial alkaloid called berberine which is most well known in dermatology for it’s benefits in improving chronic inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant that is present in a lot of topical skin care products as it is well studied to prevent signs of aging and protects the skin against environmental toxins.

Micronutrient minerals may be the key players in preventing and healing acne. Daily Cleanse contains a combination of these including zinc, copper, selenium, and manganese. These minerals have anti-inflammatory properties that are beneficial for treating acne. Although there is not good scientific data on these minerals alone being a miracle cure, when they are used in combination with each other and additional supplements like those mentioned above, we have seen excellent results!

As I mentioned before, there are a tremendous number of good reviews online about this product and most of them are about the improvement of acne specifically. This supplement can also be used in addition to traditional acne treatments to boost results.

I take 2 pills daily with a meal and my other favorite supplements like vitamin D. So far, my acne has been clearer, my skin is glowing, and I have to admit that my digestion seems improved too.

I’m definitely recommending Daily Cleanse as part of my good skin and good health plan.

Honestly, how great would it be to shop Sephora with a dermatologist at our side? This is about as close as it gets. We loved getting this kind of in-depth professional feedback from Dr. Samolitis and are thrilled at the prospect of more of our readers hopping on the clean beauty bandwagon with skincare that truly comes from the inside out!
