I just had the best time visualizing and creating this special little nursery for our sweetie man!
Having the time to actually “nest” was an unexpected gift. When I was diagnosed with vasa previa early on and admitted to the hospital at 32 weeks, the nursery and master bath area were still getting renovated. (You can read more about my pregnancy and birth story here). Besides not having a physical space yet, we also didn’t have the nursery furniture, since the space under construction was really the only place to put it.
I had accepted that Jeff would be the one to put all of baby’s sweet clothes away and set everything up. I craved doing this for myself and grieved not being able to spend time on his room when I was admitted.
When I found out just before 36 weeks that I’d be spending the rest of my pregnancy at home, I was elated!
The nursery space is right off our bedroom. It used to be my office plus two random vanities. We turned the vanity area into a much-needed closet and added a door that leads into the new bathroom plus a sliding barn door to separate it from our room. We also replaced all of the dark gray carpet with light gray carpet so everything feels a lot softer. A fresh coat of Sherwin Williams Pure White paint helped, too. More on the bathroom in another post!
My vision for this space was airy, calm, minimal, and warm. I wanted a bright, neutral room with pops of cheerful color. I knew we’d spend a lot of time in there and I wanted it to feel like a little sanctuary. I also wanted furniture that would grow with Max and didn’t come off as overly “baby.”
Walking into his nursery in the morning truly brings me so much joy!
I partnered with my friends at Milk Street on the furniture and it absolutely made the room. They were kind enough to offer a special discount for Hummusapien readers, so be sure to enter code ALEXIS10 at checkout for 10% off your entire purchase!
Julie, the founder, is a mama herself, and it was so special to support a small, female-owned biz in these crazy times. Plus as soon as I saw their stunning new Branch Collection, I knew it was just perfect for the space.
The Branch Convertible Crib in Natural with Snow is truly a statement piece. It’s the focal point of the nursery! The crib is modern but still feels whimsical, and I love how the unique curvature is reminiscent of nature.
Constructed with sustainable New Zealand pine and acacia, the Branch crib is not only fabulous to look at, but it’s also responsibly produced. Milk Street uses only Grade-A , Phase II carb compliant materials and Greenguard Gold certified paints and stains (screened for 360 VOCs and over 10,000 chemicals). The crib meets and/or exceeds all ASTM and CPSC protocols and has been tested in a third-party lab for optimal construction, finishing, and packaging.
From crib to tot bed to day bed to full adult bed, I appreciate that this crib is one that grows with baby. The substantial Branch Adult Bed Conversion Kit includes a set of solid wood bed slats plus four center support legs for extra mattress support.

I love this sand rainbow muslin crib sheet. We alternate it with this amazing hypoallergenic silk sheet from Coco Beans, started by a local Columbus mama! You can use code hummusapien10 for 10% off Coco Beans’ site.
I knew we wanted a wide dresser that Max could keep using as he grew. We went with the Branch Double Dresser in Snow paired with the Branch Changer Tray in Snow. The dresser is a great size for all of his clothes, blankets, bibs, burp cloths, and swaddles. We added these black hexagon knobs since for a little pop! I use these cubes to help organize everything.
The dresser comes with hardware to secure it to the wall so there aren’t any safety concerns.
The Changer Tray has two compartments, which is perfect for housing the changing pad plus the diaper caddy which is where we keep his diapers, butt paste, butt paste applicator, our favorite lotion, and all over ointment (get 10% off at checkout!).
We went with this sleepytime rocking chair in light brown and ivory boucle since we wanted a rocker we’d continue to use post baby phase. Besides being absolutely adorable, it’s also super comfy and wide—perfect for feeding and story time! (It was out of stock for a while but I put my email on the waitlist and it came back in stock quickly.)
This pouf makes a great foot rest.
We went with an affordable IKEA table that would survive having milk and such spilled on it. That was definitely good foresight on our end since lots of snacks, water, and breast milk end up on the table.
A sweet bird lamp (this base + this ivory and gold rawhide shade) add the perfect whimsical touch. We love using the red light setting on this silicone bear nightlight during bedtime. Can you spot the cutest avocado toy in the right corner?
spice racks house all of Max’s little baby books.
Basically every wall in this space is full of windows besides where the closet is. This means amazing natural light, but it also means limited wall decor options! I love this boho print from local artist Into The Pages that we framed for one of the small wall spaces. A lovely abstract shapes clock hangs on the opposite wall.
Our friend Ryan made the coolest custom herringbone white barn door (plus
black hardware and
handle) to add some separation since our bedroom is connected to the nursery by a step. This was actually an afterthought, but it’s been the biggest game changer when it comes to minimizing noise.
I hope you loved our nursery tour. Up next…our remodeled bathroom!
